FAQs

Sputnik Guides are easy to use, but before you get started you might want to review the FAQs to make sure everything goes smoothly! Here are some answers to common questions.

I clicked on the link to download the tour, and it says I am downloading a .zip file. Is that correct?

Yes. Each tour downloads as a .zip file, which is a compressed folder. Once the file has downloaded, you have to unzip the file (by double clicking on it), and then drag the folder that is created into itunes. After dragging the file into itunes you will see the tour as an album or playlist, with a number of different tracks. This playlist can then be transfered onto the ipod or other mp3 player.

When you import them into itunes, it should look like this:

I have Windows Media Player, not iTunes. Can I still use Sputnik Guides?

Yes. You need to be able to play .m4a files. Windows Media Player may need an add-on to support this file type. Microsoft will prompt you to download an add-on for .m4a files, or you can download a free program here. You can also download iTunes for windows, free, here.

Why aren't the tours just one audio file, why do you break it into separate tracks?

The tours are divided into separate tracks to make it easier for listeners to navigate, rewind, repeat and find their place after pausing the guides.

How will I know where to go to start the tour?

Before downloading a tour, you must go to a page that describes the tour stops and duration. This page also has information about the starting point, how to get there on pubic transportation, a photo of the landmark at the starting point and a google map showing the starting point. Under the google map, you will also see a link to a printable google map of the entire tour route.

What if I get lost?

We recommend printing out the google map highlighting the tour route before you go, so that you can always refer to it if in doubt. If you get lost, go back to the previous stop on the tour, find your location on the map and then rewind the guide and listen to the directions from that stop again. If you had substantial trouble with a certain part of a tour, please let us know. We do are best to make everything clear but we make mistakes too!

What do I do at the end of the tour?

At the end of each tour there are directions to other nearby attractions and to the nearest public transportation.
